VAT calculator
5% UAE VATHow the VAT calculation works
Two formulas cover every case.
Adding VAT to a price
Use this when you know the price before VAT and need the amount to invoice.
- VAT = price before VAT × 0.05
- Total = price before VAT × 1.05
Removing VAT from a total
Use this when a price already includes VAT and you need to know how much of it is tax.
- Price before VAT = total ÷ 1.05
- VAT = total − price before VAT
| Price before VAT | VAT at 5% | Total including VAT |
|---|---|---|
| AED 100.00 | AED 5.00 | AED 105.00 |
| AED 1,000.00 | AED 50.00 | AED 1,050.00 |
| AED 9,523.81 | AED 476.19 | AED 10,000.00 |
| AED 25,000.00 | AED 1,250.00 | AED 26,250.00 |
| AED 375,000.00 | AED 18,750.00 | AED 393,750.00 |
When the answer is not 5%
The calculator applies the standard rate. It does not apply to supplies that are zero-rated, such as exports of goods outside the GCC and international transport, or exempt, such as residential rent and certain financial services. If you are unsure which treatment applies to a sale, ask our VAT consultants before you invoice.
AED 375,000 in the last row is the turnover at which VAT registration becomes mandatory.

How do I calculate 5% VAT in the UAE?
Multiply the price before VAT by 0.05 to get the VAT, then add it to the price. For AED 1,000, the VAT is AED 50 and the total is AED 1,050.
How do I remove VAT from a price that already includes it?
Divide the total by 1.05 to get the price before VAT. The difference is the VAT. For a total of AED 1,050, the price before VAT is AED 1,000 and the VAT is AED 50.
Is taking 5% off the total the same as removing VAT?
No. 5% of AED 1,050 is AED 52.50, which is too much. The VAT inside a VAT-inclusive price is the total multiplied by 5 and divided by 105, about 4.76% of the total.
What is the VAT rate in the UAE?
The standard rate is 5%. Some supplies are zero-rated, such as exports outside the GCC, and some are exempt, such as residential rent.
Are prices in UAE shops shown with VAT?
Prices shown to consumers must include VAT. Business quotations and invoices usually show the price before VAT, the VAT and the total separately.
How is VAT rounded on an invoice?
VAT is stated in dirhams and rounded to the nearest fils, which is two decimal places. This calculator rounds the same way.
