Key points

  • Salaries are not taxed in Dubai or the wider UAE
  • Personal investment and personal rental income are not taxed
  • Individuals running a business with turnover above AED 1 million fall under corporate tax
  • You may still owe tax in your home country

Tax on salary in Dubai

The UAE does not levy personal income tax. Your salary, allowances, bonuses and end-of-service benefits are paid without any tax deducted, whether you are a UAE national or an expatriate. There are no tax brackets or slabs and no annual personal tax return.

Employers of UAE and GCC nationals make social security contributions, and employees pay into an unemployment insurance scheme. These are not income taxes.

Investment and rental income

Income an individual earns from personal investments is not taxed. That covers bank interest, dividends, and gains on shares, bonds and crypto assets held in a personal capacity.

Rent from property you own personally is also outside corporate tax, as long as the activity does not need a business licence. There is no capital gains tax on individuals.

When an individual pays corporate tax

An individual who carries on a business or business activity in the UAE becomes a taxable person once the turnover from that business exceeds AED 1 million in a calendar year. This catches sole establishments, freelancers and consultants working under their own name.

Above that level you must register for corporate tax and file a return. Tax is then 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% above it. Salary, personal investment income and personal real estate income are ignored when testing the AED 1 million limit.

Company owners

If you own a company, the company pays corporate tax on its profit. What you take out is not taxed again in your hands: dividends from a UAE company are exempt, and a salary is not taxed either.

Payments from a company to its owner are deductible for the company only up to a market rate, so how you pay yourself affects the company's tax bill.

Taxes you do pay

Living in Dubai is not tax free. You will meet 5% VAT on most purchases, excise tax on tobacco and sweetened drinks, a municipality fee on rent and hotel stays, and customs duty on imports.

Your home country

Not being taxed in the UAE does not settle your position elsewhere. Some countries tax their citizens or residents on worldwide income. If you keep ties to another country, check its residence rules and any tax treaty with the UAE. A UAE tax residency certificate can help support a treaty claim.
