Key points

  • The best firm for you depends on your size, sector and what you need done
  • Ask who does the work and who reviews it
  • Insist on a written scope and a fixed fee
  • Choose a firm that handles accounting and tax together

The types of accounting firm in Dubai

Accounting companies in Dubai fall into four broad groups, and each suits a different kind of client.

TypeBest forTrade-off
Big Four and international networksListed companies, banks, large groups, statutory auditsHigh fees; small clients get junior teams
Mid-sized local and regional firmsEstablished companies needing audit, tax and accountingQuality varies by partner
Specialist accounting and tax practicesSmall and mid-sized businesses wanting hands-on serviceNarrower range of services
Freelance accountantsVery small businesses with simple booksNo review, no cover, limited tax depth

Start with what you actually need

"Accounting" covers several different jobs. Be clear which ones you are buying:

  • Bookkeeping: recording transactions and reconciling accounts
  • Financial statements: year-end accounts under IFRS
  • Audit: an independent opinion on those accounts, from a licensed auditor
  • VAT: registration, returns and advice
  • Corporate tax: registration, computation and the annual return
  • Advisory: budgets, forecasts and management reporting

An audit must be done by a firm independent of whoever keeps your books. Everything else can sensibly sit with one provider.

Ten questions to ask before you sign

  1. Who will be my day-to-day contact, and what are their qualifications?
  2. Who reviews their work?
  3. Do you prepare corporate tax and VAT returns in-house?
  4. Which accounting software do you use, and will the account be in my company's name?
  5. On what date each month will I receive my reports?
  6. What exactly is included in the fee, and what is charged extra?
  7. How do I send documents, and how quickly do you respond to questions?
  8. Have you worked with businesses in my sector and my free zone?
  9. What happens to my data if I leave?
  10. Can I see a sample of the monthly reports you produce?

How accounting firms in Dubai charge

Most firms quote a fixed monthly fee for bookkeeping based on transaction volume, with separate fees for VAT returns, the corporate tax return and year-end accounts. Some bundle everything into packages.

Be wary of very low quotes. Bookkeeping that is cheap because nobody reviews it becomes expensive when a tax return has to be corrected. Compare what is included, not the headline number.

Warning signs

  • No engagement letter or written scope
  • Your books kept in software you cannot access
  • Reports that arrive late or only when you chase
  • VAT returns filed without a reconciliation you can see
  • Vague answers about who is responsible for corporate tax

Quick answers

The short version of what this guide covers.

Ask us something else
Which are the top accounting firms in Dubai?

It depends on what you need. International networks lead for large audits. Small and mid-sized businesses are often better served by a specialist practice that gives them direct access to senior people.

How much do accounting firms charge in Dubai?

Fees depend on transaction volume and scope. Ask for a fixed monthly quote that states what is included.

Do I need an accounting firm or an in-house accountant?

Companies with modest volumes usually get better value and better review from a firm. An in-house accountant makes sense as volume and complexity grow.

Should the same firm do my accounting and my tax?

It usually works better. The tax return is built on the books, and one firm handling both removes the gaps between them. A statutory audit should come from a separate, independent firm.

Are accounting firms in Dubai regulated?

Auditors must be licensed and registered. Tax agents are registered with the Federal Tax Authority. Bookkeeping itself is not separately licensed, which is why checking qualifications matters.
